Your guide to EV Charging Installations at Home
Can I get an Electric Vehicle Charger installed at home?
With electric vehicles growing in demand and the move to sustainable cost efficient driving one of the biggest hurdles is being able to charge your car whether than be at a charging station or with your own Electric Vehicle Charger at home.

If you are planning to get an EV, installing a home charger is a great solution. Whilst the installation is a straight forward process its important to understand the process, what's involved and what type of charger is best for you.

We try to breakdown the common questions below to see if having an electric charger installed is right for you. Whether its deciding what type of charger is best, planning and installing the charger or easing some common myths we can help.
Is an Electric Charger right for your home?
Electric cars are growing ever more popular and now you want to know if you can benefit from having a charger installed at home. The great news is yes, you can and we are here to help!
If you have off street parking and a suitable place for a charger to be installed such as a driveway, carport or garage installation can take as little as a few hours ready for you to start charging the same day.

With the ability to charge upto 10 times cheaper than charging stations using a dedicated EV tariff and having the flexibility of charging at home makes Electric Vehicle chargers a fantastic investment.
How long does an installation take and what's involved?
The installation time and simplicity of installation depends on a few factors, where the charger is located, how easily accessible the consumer unit is and what type of charger is being installed are just a few factors to consider.

In most cases your charger will be installed and usable on the same day, cable routes and distance between the charger and your consumer unit may have an impact on this but most charger are finished within a few hours.
What type of charger do I need?
Most electric cars come with a type 2 cable outlet as standard. The difference with chargers is you can have either a tethered or untethered unit meaning the charger will either have a charging cable built in or just an outlet ready for you to provide your own.

With home chargers you will also find there are generally two types of kw rating 7.4kw or 22kw. Choosing the right charger will depend on what kind of power supply you have at home and its available voltage. Whilst a 22kw charger is the ideal solution as it charges the the vehicle faster most domestic properties cannot handle the current this charger demands. If you're unsure what kind of power supply you have give one of our experts a call for some free advice or use our Live Chat now.
What other factors should I be aware of?
There are a few other factors to think about before having a charger installed, these include:

-
Who owns the property or land the charger will be installed on?

Rental properties, garages or car ports that cross public land or structures that share ownerships will all need special consideration before installing a car charger.

-
Have you got good wifi coverage in the chargers location?

Most chargers require adequate wifi coverage to function. Both the app and charger require constant communication to ensure you benefit from the lowest tariff and the charger can monitor its current load to ensure it doesn't have a negative effect on your properties electrical system.

-
How easy is it to get a new supply cable from the consumer unit to the chargers location?

Home chargers require a specific size and supply cable type and therefore its highly unlikely any of your existing cables are suitable to use as a power supply. As such a new cable installation is highly likely, if your consumer unit is inaccessible this may cause a delay or prevent a charger from being installed altogether. We suggest discussing these requirements with Empowered Electrical during an on site no obligation inspection.

-
Have you got a listed building or is the charger being installed in a permit location

Most chargers can be installed fuss free but its worth considering the rules and regulations should you live in a listed property or if the charger is being installed in an unusual location.

-
Is your current electrical installation up.to standard and meets current regulations?

EV Chargers require very specific safety requirements due to the type of environment thy are installed in. Chargers require both double pole RCD/RCBO protection along with Surge and PEN Fault detection devices. This is in addition to the standard requirements found in BS7671 for 18th edition installtions.
